PAT JOHNSON - artist statement
Working in clay for over 45 years in the small town of Fayetteville, the slow pace of rural life has given me plenty of time to sort things out & plenty of reasons to use my art as a mode of expression as rural Texas is bombarded by constant change. Through my art I attempt to unveil my fears & desires. I show the fine line between THE seen & the unseen, humor & sadness, right & wrong.
The narrative clay work references personal, political, & social issues. Influences range from antiquity to popular culture. In these imagined scenarios, I depict myself as the protagonist taking action against racial injustice, political corruption & corporate greed. Using humor to quickly grab the viewer's attention, the weighty statements become evident on observation.
My art is labor-intensive, obsessively detailed, coiled & slab built. Combining my interest in drawing & clay, I developed a style of working on ceramics with underglaze pencils & pastels. Another exploration in technique involves wax, underglaze, & an etching tool, & reflects my interest in printmaking. On newer work I abandoned glazes & used the ancient form of casein paint on clay.
Works consists of multiples, in a range of size; clay bodies; glazed or unglazed; & grouped around specific themes. I am constantly looking at art history. During production new areas of interest arise & lead to the next body of work.
The most recent work based on a childhood fear of scary things under the bed has served as a metaphor for my current life situation. The beds are based on my real bed & I wanted to challenge the fragility of clay. I reverted to using glaze so that the viewer is very aware that they are made of clay.
Making work clarifies my beliefs & feelings. The ritual of making can bring me back from the brink of frustration to a balance, hopefully, producing a similar effect on the viewer. I feel I have made a successful piece when the viewer can make it their own story.
